GET TO KNOW ME

Cartography and maps are an applied field as you need a subject for the trade. To me, some of the most interesting topics to make maps of are the natural environment, ideologies, politics, finance, and agriculture. Highly complex social and political topics benefit greatly from good graphics and maps to help others understand industry challenges or problems. Some maps are made to be beautiful and show complexity, while some are quick and dirty to get the point across. I hope some of my work on the Projects tab shows you what I'm capable of.

In addition to GIS work I love working with my hands and have dabbled in carpentry and wood working, blacksmithing, wrought glass, drawing and painting.

I am an avid surfer and surfboard shaper as well. In college I taught a surfboard shaping class and have led over 250 students in shaping their own boards. We talk about hydrodynamics, oceanography, and materials science. I made sure to touch on the engineering principles of form and function, and how thinking about one can inform the other.

Shaping boards has honed my approach to producing quality work, how to think holistically about a process, and what details are important in production.
